Agora Entrepreneurs Meet Secretary Clinton
![]() Nicaraguan entrepreneurs Jacqueline Reyes who runs a shoe manufacturing company, Calzado Reyes, with her husband and Aida Garcia who runs a children’s clothing business, Oscarito's, both traveled to Washington, DC recently for the State Department’s Pathways to Prosperity Women's Entrepreneurship Conference. With a theme of "access," the conference matched over a hundred female entrepreneurs and mentors from across North and South America to strengthen entrepreneurial activity in the hemisphere. Agora was a proud co-sponsor of the conference, contributing to the design and organizing the conference's "Access to Finance" panel. It was moderated by Paul Davidson from Agora Parthernsips, and included former Citi Bank Nicaraguan CEO and Agora advisory board member, Mercedes Deshon. The panel covered a full spectrum of financing options for small businesses, from bank loans to angel and venture capital. Nearly 40% of the entrepreneurs Agora supports are women and we are deeply committed to supporting a powerful network of women entrepreneurs throughout Central America. If you are interested in getting involved with Agora's emerging Women's Entrepreneurship Initiative, please contact us for more details. SVN Recognizes Agora for Innovation

The panel of judges for this award includes Madeline Albright and Bill Gates Sr. They will select a leader that demonstrates creativity and whose organization has a lasting impact on the community they are serving. Agora and Ricardo Teran are nominated for their efforts to unlock the potential small business entrepreneurs to improve their communities. To learn more about the award and the other nominees check out the McNulty Prize 2009 video. Consulting Program Expands to El Salvador
Agora is excited to announce its first consulting project in El Salvador. We are once again partnering with Georgetown’s Global Marketing and International Commerce Program to support Sweets Bakery. The women-owned and operated bakery has eight stores and employees 65 people in El Salvador. The consulting engagement is designed to help Sweets Bakery develop a socially responsible marketing strategy to enter the U.S. Consulting for Sweets Bakery represents the first phase of Agora Partnerships' expansion into El Salvador and the rest of Central America. We will have a lot more to say about these plans in future news updates. Agora Partnerships is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to attacking poverty and building wealth in developing countries through socially responsible entrepreneurship. Agora Partnerships provides talented entrepreneurs in emerging markets with the tools, networks, and financing necessary to launch successful, socially responsible businesses - the kind that can create decent long-term jobs. We seek to create opportunities for talent to flourish in environments normally characterized by closed social networks and inefficient markets. Our mission is to identify the leadership talent of the developing world and unleash it. |
