Olga Lumbi
“I have learned that to be an entrepreneur, to really be able to do it, you have to view entrepreneurialism as a life philosophy.”
- Olga Lumbi
Olga Lumbi never dreamed she would run her own business. After graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Engineering (UNI) in Managua, she planned to find work in chemical operations position at a local factory. But jobs were scarce and after a series of unfulfilling jobs she enrolled in an entrepreneurship course offered by the university. It was there that her future line of all natural baby foods was born. Olga and AGGÚ’s other co-founder, Meyling Ortiz Baldizón, won a $1,500 business plan competition. This was the beginning of a two year journey that ended with the purchase of a small production facility.
Despite their early success, AGGÚ had to deal with the difficult challenges of branding, marketing, international competition, and financing--the uphill climb of running a start-up. Thanks to the help of family and friends, she and her associates (including her brother, José Ismael) were able to furnish their plant with donated supplies, learn from the business experiences of others, and formulate the best-tasting recipes. Today AGGÚ is the first and only business in Nicaragua that does not add artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives to their baby food.
Olga is passionate about social responsibility. She only sells products that are healthy for consumers, and when asked about the future of AGGÚ, she is most concerned with feeding the hungry. With levels of malnutrition among children and infants at an alarming high, Olga hopes that someday AGGÚ can work with local organizations to help supplement the diets of Nicaragua’s most destitute communities.
